Derby

A FAIR PLAYING FIELD: CONSTRUCTION RULES! 

The car must be built from parts of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) & friends "Official Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit.” Car kits from other retailers are not acceptable.

Width: 

o Width shall not exceed 2 3/4 “  

o Front & center area of car must be at least 3/8” wide for starting bar  

o The minimum width between the wheels is 1 3/4". This is to ensure clearance of the lane guides.  

Length: 

o Overall length may not exceed 7”. This includes any weights, decorative tail pipes, wheels etc.  

Height: 

o Overall height shall not exceed 2 3/4” so as to clear the scoring board.  

Weight: 

o Total weight is not to exceed 5 ounces (141.7grams). The car may be built up to a maximum weight by the addition of wood and/or types of metal, provided it is securely attached to the car body.  

Clearance:

o Minimum bottom clearance is 3/8" (including weights) to ensure clearance of the lane guides.  

o Front of car must be no higher than 7/8” for starting bar  

Wheels:

o Rounding of the wheels surface, drilling holes or altering the original composition of the wheels is not allowed.  

o Washers, bushings, sleeves or any types of wheel bearings and connecting axles are prohibited.  

o No starting devices, springs or “Hub Cap” style wheel coverings are allowed.  

Detailing:

o Details such as steering wheel, driver, windshield, decals, painting, and other interior/exterior items are allowed as long as they do not cause the car to exceed any of the width, length, weight or clearance specifications.

o No “Hub Cap” style wheel coverings are allowed.
